re:Invent 2024 Day 0 – The Calm Before the Storm (Or Not)
AWS re:Invent 2024 hasn't officially kicked off, but Day 0 has already delivered 21 announcements, unforgettable events, and a preview of the week ahead. Get the inside scoop here.
It’s Sunday, December 1st, and I’ve officially been in Las Vegas for just 24 hours. It’s AWS re:Invent week—a time for innovation, community, and the kind of energy that can only come from thousands of cloud enthusiasts gathering in one place.
Sunday: More Than Just a Warm-Up
Sunday at re:Invent has historically been a quiet day—a time to recover from jet lag, take a hike, see a show, or mentally prepare for a week of “drinking from the hosepipe.” Traditionally, it’s been the calm before the storm. But this year? This year feels different.
There’s a noticeable buzz in the air. Sessions are already in full swing, social events are kicking off, and yes, there’s even a chicken wing contest. Caesar’s Forum is alive with activity: chalkboards in the expo area are covered in everyone’s personal monikers and logos, a DJ is spinning tracks, and badge collection and swag distribution are running at full throttle.
Is AWS Tatonka Back?
Wait—did someone say chicken wing contest? Could it be? AWS Tatonka is back? Well, not officially by name, but it sure feels like it. This Sunday feels like more than just a warm-up. It feels like a soft launch for the week of re:Invent.
The energy and community engagement remind me of the legendary Midnight Madness. I only attended one Midnight Madness in the past, but it was one of the wildest and most chaotic pre-events I’ve ever seen at re:Invent. This year’s Sunday seems to be an exploded view of that energy—bigger, brighter, and full of nostalgia.
And Then… AWS Drops 21 Announcements
Just as I was soaking in the vibe, AWS went and turned the excitement up a notch—or twenty-one notches, to be exact. Yes, 21 announcements dropped on Day 0. Let me recap for you: the event hasn’t officially started yet. re:Invent kicks off tomorrow. But AWS has already decided to give us a taste of what’s to come with an avalanche of new releases.
So, let’s dig into these announcements and see what they mean for the future of the cloud. Buckle up—this is just the beginning!
